Fall Preparation Guide

by | Oct 19, 2023

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisper, it’s that time of year when we, at Pine Creek Homes, want to share some valuable insights on preparing your home for the fall and impending winter months. While our expertise lies in crafting dream homes, we understand the importance of maintaining and safeguarding your existing space. Here are some key steps to help you get your home ready for the colder seasons.

Step 1- Clean Out Your HRV Filters: Don’t neglect indoor air quality. Regularly clean the filters in your Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) to ensure fresh, clean air throughout the winter.

Step 2- Replace Your Furnace Filters: A well-maintained furnace is the key to a cozy home. Regularly replace filters to optimize heating efficiency and air quality.

Step 3- Disconnect Your Sump Pump Discharge Hose: Prevent freezing and potential damage by disconnecting your sump pump discharge hose. This step ensures your sump pump can function without a hitch, protecting your basement from flooding.

Step 4- Drain Your Garden Hoses: Extend the life of your garden hoses by draining and storing them indoors. This simple measure safeguards against damage due to freezing temperatures.

Step 5- Get Your Sprinkler Systems Winterized: Professional winterization of your sprinkler systems is a wise investment. It prevents frozen pipes and costly repairs in the spring.

Step 1- Turn On Heat Tapes for Your Water System: Ensure your water system’s heat tapes are turned on. This precaution prevents frozen pipes, ensuring you have access to water during your winter retreats.

Step 2- Pull Your Docks Out Before the Lake Freezes Over: Safeguard your docks by pulling them out before the lake freezes. This preserves their condition and prevents damage.

Step 3- Stock Up on Firewood: In the serene winter setting of your cottage, a warm fire is a must. Make sure you have enough firewood chopped and ready for those cozy evenings by the fireplace.

At Pine Creek Homes, we understand that the custom building process is 90% of the experience. Just as we focus on delivering quality and value with confidence in our custom builds, we encourage you to approach home maintenance with the same commitment to quality. These fall and winter preparations will not only keep your home in excellent condition, but also provide peace of mind throughout the season.
