Not everyone has the luxury of already living in or near the area where they’re planning a custom build. Whether it’s moving for work, or building a cottage 1,000 miles from home, being able to build in a location that’s more than a couple hours from where you currently reside can feel daunting.
The good news is, technology today has made it easier than ever. What previously might have felt like a barrier now feels like a normal way of life. In fact, with the recent developments of Covid 19, almost every client we’re dealing with right now might as well be 1,000 miles away.
What’s more, our clients who live 10 minutes from our office are getting the same experience right now as our clients living in Chicago.
When we’re not able to meet in person, here’s what the experience looks like:
What would regularly be an in person introductory meeting to discuss your future build, would instead be a phone meeting with screen sharing capabilities or a video conferencing meeting.
While going through the design process of your build, all designs will be sent digitally, as well as reviewed throughout the process in a video conference call with screen sharing. Changes can be made to your plan in real time while on the call. You can literally watch your plan take shape (pretty neat, right?).
View your custom home virtually
As the design process continues, we have the capability for virtual 3-D walkthroughs of your future build, so you’re able to see what the finished product is going to look like long before we even break ground.
As we move into the selection process, we can use digital catalogs for the majority of these decisions. However, there are times when physical samples of products may be necessary. After all, some things simply aren’t the same on a computer screen as they are in real life. In this case, we ship samples to your location so you’re able to look them over in person.
A sample box might look something like this: a piece of flooring, a cabinet door in the right colour, a stained piece of baseboard, and some paint swatches. When you’re able to physically see these items and how they might work together, it can help with the decision-making process.
Once the design and selection process is complete, we move on to the actual build. At this point, the struggle for a homeowner is feeling like they’re missing out by not being there to see their project take shape. Again, we go back to technology to help solve this problem.
View your progress online
We use an online management software that allows you to track your build in real time. It has a live schedule that’s updated weekly, and it allows us to post pictures of your project as it progresses. This software also tracks your selections, so it’s easy to keep track of everything relating to your build.
Taking on a custom build while living out of province or out of country has truly never been easier. While it may not be quite the same as being here in person, with technology today it’s getting darn close. If you live out of Province or out of Country and are wanting to build in Southern Manitoba, the Whiteshell, Northwestern Ontario or Lake of the Woods, we’d love to hear from you!
