Building a Custom Home from Afar: How We Make It Work

by | Feb 14, 2025

Not everyone has the convenience of living near the location where they plan to build. Whether you’re relocating for work or designing a cottage miles away from home, taking on a custom build in a different province—or even country—can feel overwhelming.

The good news? Advances in technology have made remote homebuilding more accessible than ever. What once seemed like a logistical challenge is now a seamless process, allowing homeowners to stay involved at every stage, no matter where they are.

A Streamlined Remote Building Experience

Whether you’re just down the road or thousands of miles away, our process ensures every client receives the same level of service and attention. With careful planning and the right tools, we make sure that distance doesn’t get in the way of building your dream home. Within the last few years we have even built a cottage for a couple who live in Chicago!

Consultations and Design Meetings

Instead of in-person meetings, we schedule phone or video calls with screen-sharing capabilities. This allows us to walk you through design concepts, floor plans, and layout adjustments in real time. You’ll watch your vision take shape right before your eyes. These meetings also give you the opportunity to ask questions and fine-tune details as we go.

3D Render Walkthroughs

Seeing your home come to life before construction begins is an essential part of the process. With 3D renderings and virtual walkthroughs, you can explore every detail of your future home from the comfort of your current location. This step helps ensure that everything feels just right before we break ground. Our designer will  provide you access to your own design in-app, so you can show all your friends and family.

Making Selections from Anywhere

Choosing finishes and materials is a crucial part of the custom-building process. While digital catalogs cover most options, we know some selections—like flooring, cabinetry, and paint—are best experienced in person. When needed, we ship sample boxes directly to you so you can see and feel your choices before making final decisions. This approach allows you to make informed choices without ever stepping foot in our office or a showroom.

Communication Throughout the Build

Regular updates and clear communication are key to a successful remote build. We provide ongoing updates via email, phone, and our online management platform, ensuring that you always know what’s happening with your project. Any questions or concerns can be addressed quickly, keeping the process smooth and stress-free.

Real-Time Project Tracking

Once construction begins, staying updated on progress is easy with our online project management software. You’ll have access to a live schedule, weekly updates, invoicing, and photos of your build, ensuring you never miss a step. This system allows you to follow along as each stage of construction is completed, giving you peace of mind no matter where you are.

Building Beyond Borders Has Never Been Easier

Managing a build from out of province or out of country no longer means feeling disconnected. With our proven remote process, you can confidently design and build your dream home or cottage without being on-site. From the first consultation to the final walk-through, we are committed to making your experience smooth, transparent, and enjoyable. If you’re considering building anywhere in Southern Manitoba, we’d love to guide you through the journey.
