There is a wide selection of different woodwork to choose from when building your home and the range of cost can vary significantly.
MDF
One of the most common options for woodwork is MDF casing and baseboard with a MDF door to match. MDF is basically a pressed particle board that paints really well.
Often these finishes are painted white to give that crisp, clean look. This is one of the most economical options.
Solid Wood
When it comes to using a solid wood product, the most common is Aspen or Pine. They both stain well, and can match up to most of the other wood work that may already be chosen for your home.
Pine and Aspen would be on the more economical end of the solid wood finishes, but still more costly than MDF.
On the higher end of the cost spectrum, we get into materials like Maple, Cherry, Walnut and other woods. While cost goes up when using these materials, the high quality finish is tough to match.
Along with having so many choices with the type of materials used for wood work, there are also many styles to choose from.
Styles
Baseboards and casings can be square edge, beveled edge, or have a detail cut into them. Interior doors can be solid core, hollow core, shaker style and multiple panel styles.
The purpose of showing you so many styles and types of woodwork is not to confuse you or make you feel overwhelmed, but to give you an idea of what’s out there. The good news is these options will be partially weeded out before you ever have to make this decision.
You’ll find that right from the time you start designing your plan, your dream home or cottage, will have it’s own style.
Not every finish goes with every style
If you’re building a modern home with bright rooms and clean lines, for example, using MDF baseboards with white shaker doors might be a great combination.
If you’re building a timber frame cabin with pine ceilings, pine baseboard and doors to match, a white MDF baseboard probably wouldn’t fit with this scenario.
At Pine Creek Homes we’re experts in guiding you through this process and recommending products that will suit your style and your budget.
