Working with people who bring hard work, integrity, and genuine care for their craft changes everything—and that’s exactly what I’ve experienced with Dan Martin, owner of Martin Electric. With decades of industry knowledge, Dan is a trusted partner, but what stands out most is how he leads his team with high standards and a commitment to doing things right. He builds trust, sets the bar high, and ensures every project is handled with care. Our recent conversation on electrical planning naturally grew into a bigger reflection on innovation, teamwork, and the kind of foresight that makes all the difference in a home build.
Getting to Know Dan & Martin Electric
Behind every great business is a story. For Dan Martin, that story begins with his family roots, his love of community, and his vision to build something lasting alongside his wife, Natalie.
Q. Hey Dan, take us back—tell us a bit about yourself and how Martin Electric got its start. Where are you now, and how did you get there?
A. I’m a first-generation Canadian, born and raised in Winnipeg. My parents immigrated from Spain and showed me the value of hard work and family. My wife Natalie and I live in Oakbank with our two kids, and we run Martin Electric in the RM of Springfield.
I’ve been in the electrical industry for over 23 years, 19 of those as a contractor. We started Martin Electric 10 years ago, and today more than 60% of our team also lives in the RM. We believe strongly in living, working, hiring, and supporting locals—it’s a philosophy that keeps our community thriving.
When we’re not on the job, my family and I love heading to the lake, spending time with friends, or visiting local favorites like Pineridge Hollow.
Industry Changes & Innovations
The electrical industry has changed dramatically over the last two decades. From tools to technology, the way electricians work today is faster, smarter, and more connected than ever before.
Q. Since your time working in the field, what have been some of the coolest improvements or game-changers you’ve seen in the building industry?
A. Cordless power tools have been a huge game-changer. It might sound simple, but the advances have made our work faster, cleaner, and more precise.
Another big shift has been the rise of digital tools for design, quoting, and file sharing. They’ve made projects more seamless and communication smoother with both our team and our clients.
Q. Looking ahead, what electrical gadgets or technologies are you most itching to bring into future projects?
A. We’ve been exploring high-quality soffit lighting with color-changing options. With the touch of a button, homeowners can highlight their home for any occasion while keeping a clean, modern look. These lights add versatility and personality without compromising on a clean design.
Planning Tips for Homeowners
Electrical planning is one of those things that often gets overlooked in the excitement of a new build or renovation—but it can make all the difference in how a home functions day to day. Dan shares his top advice for avoiding common mistakes and setting your home up to be both comfortable and future-proof.
Q. When you walk through a design plan, what are the biggest electrical planning mistakes homeowners tend to miss and how could they avoid them?
A. Lighting is the most common one. Many people underestimate how much they’ll need or get overwhelmed by the endless options. Taking the time to visualize how you’ll use each room helps, and that’s where your Pine Creek designer and our team can step in to guide the choices so the space feels both functional and complete.
Q. What simple electrical upgrades do you recommend to homeowners so they can avoid future headaches or added costs?
A. Pre-wiring during the rough-in stage is always smart. Whether it’s for a hot tub, EV charger, sauna, or outdoor lighting, planning for these needs early makes installation faster and more cost-effective. It also saves you the hassle of extra permits and inspections later.
Q. What’s a tiny bit of planning advice you often tell homeowners to make their electrical future-proof and stress-free?
A. The time spent reviewing plans with your Pine Creek designer is invaluable. Walk through each room and think about how you’ll actually live in it. Lighting choices can set the mood:
- Bright task lighting for kitchens and offices
- Softer dimmers for bedrooms and bathrooms
- Playful LEDs in rec rooms and kids’ spaces
Outlets are just as important. Having the right number in the right places prevents extension cords and overloaded circuits. Built-in charging stations in kitchens, offices, and bedrooms are a simple upgrade that makes daily life easier. Reviewing all of this before the rough-in stage ensures your home is not only functional but also future-ready—saving you stress and money down the road.
Building a Business Together
Behind the wiring, planning, and technology, Martin Electric is also a family story. Dan and Natalie built their business with both entrepreneurial ambition and family values at its core.
Q. Speaking of planning, what sparked the idea for you and your wife Natalie to build this company together?
A. Owning a business was always a dream of mine, and when the opportunity came it seemed like the perfect step. At the time, with two young kids, starting the company also gave us the flexibility and balance we needed as a family.
Q. What’s your dream for growing Martin Electric and as an entrepreneur—both in terms of embracing new tech and new ventures?
A. I’d love to see us develop a solar division—it’s an area with huge potential for homeowners. For now, I’m proud of the team we’ve built: a dynamic, respectful, and fun group skilled in commercial, residential, and service work. Customer satisfaction is always our top priority.
We’re thankful for all the clients who have trusted us with their projects, and we love working with Pine Creek Homes. We’re excited about what’s ahead!
